The latest TLI system commissioned by Meridian Engineers is at BHP Billiton’s Nickel Concentrator plant in Kambalda, WA. This project involved installing the Meridian system on five 1200 tonne train loading silos. These silos discharge nickel concentrate into stationary rail wagons. The system was interfaced to the existing plant PLC systems so that opening and closing of the final nickel loading chutes are under the control of the Meridian TLI controller.

The project utilised Meridian’s latest digital ‘bolt on’ load cell technology. The TLI system enabled operators to automatically batch the required amount of Nickel concentrate into each wagon to achieve the desired gross wagon target. This was achieved by first recording the tare weight from a standard Meridian in-motion track weigh rail weighbridge and adding the required batch amount to the wagon. After loading is completed, the train is then also weighed over the same weighbridge to provide gross weights that are trade certified.

The Meridian scope of work for this project included the customised design of the TLI system, supply of all hardware (majority of which is designed and manufactured by Meridian), interfacing to the existing Plant PLC systems, and the provision of a customised SCADA system.

The benefits delivered to BHP Billiton for this project included:
• Total train loading improved to +- 0.4% of required target;
• Individual wagon load fluctuations reduced to approximately +- 1% of wagon target;
• Train loading times improved by approximately 30%;
• Automated loading control; &
• Overall safety of train loading process improved significantly.
